Mimic
by C.L. Denault

In 2012, one cycle of an ancient calendar system came to a close. Humanity predicted its downfall, but it wasn’t the end of their evolutionary climb. It was the beginning.

Willow Kent is discovering that life as a second-phase prodigy comes at a price. Trapped in the London Core, her choices are limited, made difficult by her forbidden romance with Reece and the presence of a new commanding officer who establishes harsh rules. With unpredictable skills and a growing distrust in her birth parents, she is struggling to play the Core’s game. But when opportunity arises in the form of a mysterious shapeshifter, Willow realizes there’s more to her own evolution than meets the eye. She soon learns that keeping secrets is a key move, and the more dangerous they are, the greater her need to evolve into the powerful prodigy nature intended her to become.

But those closest to her have their own secrets, and her status has made her an easy target for betrayal. Who will she turn to, when nothing is as it seems?

Suddenly, the temperature skyrocketed. Pressure cinched my body, and I couldn’t breathe. Duncan flung me to the ground, shielding me as energy erupted like thunder and a crackling roar shook the room.
Hot energy waves raced over us. Digging my fingers into Duncan’s shirt, I clung to him, struggling to catch my breath even as my mind raced. Reece. He’d lost a lot of blood. I needed to get to him.
“Up,” I gasped. “Let me up.”
Duncan rolled over, taking me with him, and I pushed to my feet. As I rose, I saw Kristoffe lying face-down on the mat. He’d been thrown. Reece was stumbling toward him, trailing blood, his back to me. I called out, but he didn’t stop.
Coughing, Kristoffe lifted onto his elbows. One hand still clutching the staff shard, he flipped over just as Reece knelt beside him. I saw the victory strike—Reece’s fist hitting Kristoffe’s chest—then shrieked when the shard drove through his belly.
My heart stopped. “Reece!
Duncan ran for them, and I followed. Though the spar was over, they were still grappling. Kristoffe was laughing—a high-pitched, maniacal sound that turned to a gurgle as I skidded to a stop beside Reece. His hands were around Kristoffe’s throat.
“Reece.” I dropped to my knees, eyeing his belly. The shard had driven deep. His uniform was slick with blood. “It’s done.”
He didn’t seem to hear me. His barrier was up, his eyes veiled over, cheeks mottled red as he put every last ounce of energy into his grip. Kristoffe’s face purpled, his gurgle dwindling to a whispery gasp.
“Commander.” Duncan put his hand on Reece’s shoulder. “You won. You don’t have to do this.”
Reece shook him off.
Let him, the tiger growled. It’s his right.
“No,” I murmured, tears stinging my eyes. She’d been far too eager to kill Kristoffe herself, and I might not have had the strength to stop her. But I could stop Reece.
“Reece, look at me.” I waited, and when he didn’t respond, I took his face in my hands. “Look at me.
He slowly turned his head, and I fought back the sob bubbling up my throat. I had never seen him so desperate. He had good reason to do this—reasons going back to his childhood, it seemed—but there would be consequences. I couldn’t risk losing him to Morry’s wrath.
“Stop,” I whispered.
He stared, not seeing me, and I gently shook his face. He blinked. His eyes lost their glaze. Blinking again, he came back to me.
“That’s it,” I urged. “Let him go.”
Reece loosened his grip. He sat back slowly, his eyes locked with mine. Disappointed, the tiger gave in with a guttural sigh and reached for his heart, trying to connect us.
But a choking laugh broke us apart. Through sweat and blood and ripped skin, Kristoffe was smiling. “Couldn’t do it, could you?” he rasped. “Who’s the coward now?”
Reece wrenched back his fist. He brought it down hard, knocking Kristoffe out cold. Then he swayed, his body trembling, and I reached for him. “Told him,” he said thickly, blood seeping from his lips, “I’d wipe the smile off his face.”

He collapsed in my arms.
