The Deceivers
by Kristen Simmons

Pretty Little Liars meets Ocean's 11 in this intrigue-filled contemporary drama from acclaimed author Kristen Simmons.

Welcome to Vale Hall, the school for aspiring con artists.

When Brynn Hilder is recruited to Vale, it seems like the elite academy is her chance to start over, away from her mom's loser boyfriend and her rundown neighborhood. But she soon learns that Vale chooses students not so much for their scholastic talent as for their extracurricular activities, such as her time spent conning rich North Shore kids out of their extravagant allowances.

At first, Brynn jumps at the chance to help the school in its mission to rid the city of corrupt officials--because what could be better than giving entitled jerks what they deserve? But that's before she meets her mark--a senator's son--and before she discovers the school's headmaster has secrets he'll stop at nothing to protect. As the lines between right and wrong blur, Brynn begins to realize she's in way over head.

In the following scene, Brynn is going on a school field trip where she’ll be assigned a…nontraditional task. Hope you love it! –Kristen

Despite Caleb’s stories about field trips to places like the Smithsonian, the upper classmen from Vocational Development load into the black SUV on Tuesday morning, and are taken to a farmers’ market along the river. It’s a swanky set up, with jewelry booths and artisan chocolates, and is packed with people who walk tiny, groomed dogs on harnesses, and carry reusable grocery bags.
And probably a lot of cash, which is what most of these vendors will take.
Not that I need cash anymore.
“The long con is about rapport,” Moore tells us before we get out of the car. I sit up straighter, glancing at Charlotte, who only winks my direction. “People do things for people they like. You’re in the business of telling them what they want. Which is, what?”
“Whatever we want,” chimes Geri.
Moore nods.
“Selling can be a complicated skill, but it’s a necessary one—not just for your assignments, but for everything in life.” Moore turns back in the driver’s seat to face us. “Walk around, figure out how these vendors work. Look at this guy.” He points ahead to a man precariously balancing two flats of strawberries in one arm and a bag in the other as he crosses the street. “You think he needs all that? No. Someone talked him into it.”
“I love strawberries,” says Henry longingly from the front seat.
Moore freezes him with a look. “Pair up. I want you go buy something under five dollars. In twenty minutes we’ll meet back here to trade items. Whoever sells their item for the highest price point wins today’s challenge.” He looks to Sam, sitting on the opposite side of Charlotte. “Partner up with Brynn. Show her the ropes.”
Sam gives me a fist bump over Charlotte, who’s already assuring everyone she’ll be bringing us both down. Her smiles fades when Moore chooses Geri as her partner.
At least that means Geri’s not with Caleb.
As the rest of the class pairs off, Moore unlocks the doors. “Remember, you sense someone’s on to you, you drop what you’re doing and send me a message. I’ll come to you.”
“Let’s all try to be kind today,” Henry says as we step outside. “No buying things that will be impossible to turn around, deal?”

From the way the others laugh, it’s clear the competition is on.
