Two Dark Reigns
by Kendare Blake

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake returns with the highly anticipated third book in the Three Dark Crowns series! And while Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine all have their own scores to settle, they aren’t the only queens stirring things up on Fennbirn Island.

Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.

Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the minland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.

Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.

This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.

TOP 10 THINGS ASPIRING AUTHORS SHOULD KNOW

1. How to Google: seriously, in your research for your book and also when you are researching agents and publishers, Google is thy faithful friend.

2. About writer’s communities online, particularly those with message boards, like AbsoluteWrite Water Cooler or SCBWI: Looking to commiserate with other writers struggling through a draft? Or other writers waiting to hear back from an agent? Check there first! You will learn a lot, and maybe make some lifelong writing friends.

3. How to finish: this might be the hardest and the most important lesson to learn. If you cannot finish something, you cannot sell it. So learn to write to the end, be it the end of the short story or the end of the novel. No matter how bad that ending is. You can always go back and fix it later.

4. That editing is usually part of the process: Sure, we all know someone who can write it perfect the first time (there’s always an exception to every rule) but most of us have to revise.

5. The writing process can differ by book: Let the book tell you how it wants to be written.

6. Finish the book or the story first. Then start looking into agents or places to sell it.

7. People are going to hate what you write. This is true of every book. Try googling one star reviews of your favorite book. They’re out there. And they’ll be out there for yours too. It doesn’t mean those reviewers are right. Or that they’re wrong. It means writing is art and art is wonderful in part because we don’t all always agree about it.

8. Writing at the start is hard. You need to have a passion for it, because at first you’re going to be doing it while you’re also busy doing other things: school, work, family obligations. So if you don’t have a passion for what you’re working on, it’s going to be really hard to wake up at 3am to squeeze in time to do it.

9. Writing is WONDERFUL. The act of storytelling is its own reward. But other rewards are nice too.

10. Celebrate every milestone. Finish that chapter? Celebrate! Finish that draft? CELEBRATE! Get an agent? CELEBRATE! Sell that book? CELEBRATE! Have that book published and out in the world? Throw a party! Not everyone around you will celebrate every milestone, but celebrate anyway.

Kendare Blake is the author of several novels and short stories, most of which you can find information about via the links above. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July (for those of you doing book reports) in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She enjoys the work of Milan Kundera, Caitlin R Kiernan, Bret Easton Ellis, Richard Linklater, and the late, great Michael Jackson, I mean, come on, he gave us Thriller. She lives and writes in Kent, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.
