So Glad to Meet You
by Lisa Super

Seventeen-year-old Daphne Bowman, a bookish drama nerd in public school, might never have crossed paths with Oliver, the popular, outgoing mascot for his private school's football team, but one event has bound them inextricably. Daphne's older sister, Emily, and Oliver's older brother, Jason, who were high school sweet-hearts, committed suicide together seven years earlier.

When Daphne uncovers Emily and Jason's bucket list—a list comprised of their "Top Ten" places to visit before they die—she knows she has to tell someone. The one person who might actually get what she's going through and who might not think it's silly that she wants to complete the list, is also someone she's never spoken to—Oliver Pagano. Throwing caution to the wind, Daphne sends Oliver a Facebook message that will come to change the course of both of their senior years—and maybe their entire lives.

Tackling grief with a wry voice and an unflinching eye, So Glad to Meet You tells the story of two people who, in searching for what they've lost, end up finding what they never knew they needed—each other.

LM: What inspired you to write So Glad To Meet You?

Lisa: In 2012, on a bus in Seoul, South Korea, a friend mentioned a teenage couple she was loosely connected to who’d committed suicide together. I have no idea what we were talking about before that, but it weighed heavily on me. For years. I wanted to find a way to give that story a hopeful ending.

LM: Why did you decide to tackle such a sensitive subject {suicide} in your book?

Lisa: Mental illness shouldn’t be a taboo subject, and YA is doing a solid job of making it less so. Now society and our healthcare system need to catch up. Mental illness affects everyone, whether you’re suffering or know someone who’s suffering. I also wanted to write about distanced trauma. SGTMY takes place seven years after the suicide of Daphne and Oliver’s siblings, so the story is about the aging of grief rather than the immediate aftermath. And with that grief there’s a great deal of joy.

LM: Describe your main character—Daphne—in just three words.

Lisa: Sarcastic. Driven. Sensitive.

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Lisa: Besides the maybe too obvious, Angeles by Elliott Smith (where the title comes from), A Sorta Fairytale by Tori Amos. It’s the most bittersweet road trip song.

LM: What scene from So Glad To Meet You are you most proud of and why?

Lisa: I’d say the last scene, because I wrote about half of the book (all out of order, I don’t write chronologically) and I was restless not knowing the ending. And endings are HARD. John August says when you have two ideas you want to write, go with the one you where you know the ending. That’s great advice that I didn’t follow, lol. So when I figured out that last scene, it was a huge relief, and I knew it was right.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Lisa: I love to read, fantasize about the next place I’m going to travel, eat burritos and crepes, hike my local canyon, and watch a lot of TV (probably something on FX).

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Lisa: Thank you so much for hosting me, Sarah! And thank you to everyone who reads So Glad to Meet You. I wrote this book because it was the book I wanted to read in junior high/high school. I can’t wait for you to meet Daphne and Oliver!
