Like Never and Always
by Ann Aguirre

On a hot summer night, a screech of brakes and shattering glass changes two lives forever.

Liv wakes in the hospital, confused when they call her Morgan. She assumes it’s a case of mistaken identity, yet when the bandages come off, it’s not her face in the mirror anymore. It’s her best friend Morgan’s.

Morgan always seemed to have the perfect life, yet Liv must navigate endlessly disturbing secrets of the criminal and murderous variety—and a romance that feels like a betrayal. Torn between the boy she loved as Liv and the boy she’s grown to love as Morgan, Liv still has to survive Morgan’s last request.

with Ann Aguirre

LM: What inspired you to write Like Never and Always?

Ann: Primarily, I wanted to write a dark YA thriller about a girl torn between two brothers and I also love body swap stories, so the prospect of combining them was irresistible. I also had a scene stuck in my head for a long time—and a story that started with a terrible car crash. Everything grew out of that single scene. I hope readers enjoy the story!

LM: How did writing Like Never and Always differ from writing previous books you've written?

Ann: Honestly, it was really fun. I could indulge my desire for angst and darkness and some twisty forbidden stuff as well. The writing was fairly smooth and I had beta readers begging for chapters faster than I could write them. I loved everything about writing this book.

LM: Which character from Like Never and Always do you most relate to and why?

Ann: I don’t really relate to any of them in the sense that any of the characters are like me. But like Liv, I do understand what it’s like to be basically broken into pieces so that you have to rebuild everything from scratch.

LM: Give us a little behind the scenes story about this book!

Ann: When we were trying to sell this book, I was on a cruise between England, the Faroe Isles, Norway and Iceland, and while we were at sea, internet was super spotty, so I kept freaking out on the ship and every time we got in port, I’d run ashore and look for a WiFi hotspot to see if there was any news about an offer. Let me tell you, finding WiFi in the Faroe Isles is not easy.

LM: Can you share one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Ann: Clay opens his fingers and releases my wrist. At first I don’t understand and I knee-walk toward him, so unbelievably relieved that someone is finally ready to accept my impossible truth. But he recoils and crosses the room, backing all the way up to his desk, and then he leans on it like he needs the support.
He won’t look at me.
“What’s wrong?”
“I damn well wish you were crazy. Because . . . if I accept this as truth and you are Liv, you don’t get that this—”— He gestures between us—. “Is impossible? Your grieving family aside, my brother is breaking his heart over you right now. Liv is . . . and always will be Nathan’s girl. And you made me . . .” Here, Clay’s voice breaks. “You made me want you, too.”
“I’m sorry,” I whisper.
“That was cruel, whoever you are. Instead of me, you should’ve told Nathan. You’re the one girl in the whole world that I can’t touch, no matter how I feel or what I want.”
“But I chose you.”
His eyes close as if my words hurt, each one carving deep like a blade. “Even if you never tell anyone else, I’ll know. And I can’t do that to him, you understand? He loves you.”
I swallow hard, hardly able to get the protest out. “So do you. Before, you said nothing could change that.”
Haunted eyes lock on mine for an endless moment; it’s like he’s memorizing me. Clay’s pain is palpable, matching my own, so his reply doesn’t surprise me. “Nothing but this.”

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Ann: I watch Korean or Taiwanese dramas. Play with my pets. Hang out with my son. Play video games. Read other people’s books. Try out new recipes. Watch movies at the cinema. Occasionally we take a trip to the beach.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Ann: I hope you love Like Never and Always. Thanks so much for having me on the blog I’ll stop by to respond to questions or comments!
