This Is Not the End
by Chandler Baker

I wonder if for the rest of my life, I’ll be haunted by beautiful days.

On one cloudless, radiant summer afternoon, Lake Devereaux lost everything. The car crash claimed the lives of her best friend and boyfriend, the people who had become her family after her own fell apart. But she doesn’t have to lose them both.

The development of resurrection technology has changed the world. Under the new laws regulating the process, each person gets one resurrection to be used or forfeited on their eighteenth birthday. Mere weeks away from turning eighteen, Lake faces an impossible choice.

Envisioning life without one of the people she loves most is shattering enough, but Lake carries an additional burden: years ago, under family pressure, Lake secretly—and illegally—promised her resurrection to someone who isn’t even dead yet.

The search for answers about her future draws Lake more deeply into the secrets of her past until she begins to question everything about those closest to her. Betrayals and hurts both new and old threaten to eclipse the memories she once cherished.

Then Lake meets a boy unlike anyone she’s encountered before, who unflinchingly embraces the darkest parts of her life . . . and who believes that all resurrections are wrong.

Which path is the right one? And how can Lake start to heal when she can't move on?

with Chandler Baker

LM: Tell us a little bit about your main character—Lake—who is she?

Chandler: Poor Lake. She is a 17-year-old girl who has just lost her boyfriend, Will, and her best friend, Penny, in a tragic car accident. Will and Penny were her security blankets, the coolest people she ever knew, and her chosen family. She is a girl who has always channeled emotional stress into physical thrills and now she’s being forced to confront huge loss and impossible emotionally fraught decisions completely alone, while facing immense pressure from the grieving families of Will and Penny as well as from her own.

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Chandler: Great question! The Promise - Sturgill Simpson version

LM: Give us a little behind-the-scenes story about this book!

Chandler: I owed an option book to my publisher, Disney-Hyperion. My agent and I had agreed on another book idea and I had written and revised a full proposal: 100 pages and a synopsis, when I got the idea for This Is Not the End—down to the twist ending—in one single bolt of inspiration. I just had a Feeling about this book. Despite all the work I had put into the other one, I wanted to write This Is Not the End instead. So I emailed my agent and said, Hey, I could give you the proposal for the idea we discussed which is finished…or I could write this other idea, here’s the rough pitch. I tried to sound as neutral as possible while praying he would chose TINTE. Thankfully, he saw what I did. And TINTE was born quickly thereafter.

LM: What scene from This Is Not the End are you most proud of and why?

Chandler: Lake’s brother, Matt, is a quadriplegic and the two hardly have a relationship anymore. There is a scene in the book in which Matt asks Lake about having sex. It’s an awkward interaction between brother and sister, no doubt! And my editor and I worked and worked on this scene, wanting it to be uncomfortable, intimate and hopeful. I spoke to individuals who are paralyzed about their experience. I went back and revised again. I worried over the nuance of it. I was so proud when the copyeditor wrote a special note to me praising this scene in particular.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Chandler: Hanging out with my husband and daughter as much as I can and sneaking in walks, listening to audiobooks, having good meals with good friends.
