Fight or Flight.

All Kayla Asher wants to do is run. Run from the government housing complex she calls home. Run from her unstable mother. Run from a desperate job at No Limit Foods. Run to a better, cleaner, safer life. Every day is one day closer to leaving.

All Betsy Hopewell wants to do is survive. Survive the burner phone hidden under her bed. Survive her new rules. Survive a new school with new classmates. Survive being watched. Every minute grants her another moment of life.

MEET THE CHARACTERS OF
THE TRUTH BENEATH THE LIES

Kayla Asher is sixteen and a junior at Clairmont High School. She is fit and healthy with long blond hair. Beginning when she was five, Kayla lived with a really wonderful foster mother and a parade of foster brothers. When she was fourteen her mother, a recovering heroin addict, regained custody of her. They now live in a rundown public housing complex, leaving Kayla trapped between two worlds: her high school life with her friends from childhood and the dangerous world where she spends her nights.

Kayla works hard. She does well in school, goes to dance team practice, and has a job at a grocery store. She’s not going to live at the rundown Bluebird Estates forever; she knows that life can be safe and stable and she hungers to have that again.

Kayla: “Too much is riding on me always doing exactly the right thing. I have to get good grades. I have to participate in extracurricular activities. I have to work. I have to get a scholarship, go to college, and get out of here. I can’t risk everything because a guy made me feel special for a brief moment. That’s what happened to Mom.”

Betsy Hopewood is also sixteen. She and her mom have just moved to the small town of San Justo, Texas, near the Mexican border. Betsy is sickly thin with hacked off black hair. She’s been through a horrible traumatic experience and because of that she’s closed off to the world. San Justo is a very friendly town and people go back and forth between trying to be her friend and feeling confused about her standoffishness.

Betsy wants so badly to heal and move on with her life. She wants to have friends and make her mother proud. But she can’t. She can’t get away from her past. She can’t get away from the burner phone under her bed and the blinking message light that connects her to a violent man.

Betsy: “There’s a timid knock on my door. ‘Betsy?’ the voice asks, hopeful, as if somehow after entering the room, Betsy has turned into someone else. A happy girl with long, shiny hair and a big bright smile. Not a sad, pale girl with a dark and crooked cropped mop, wearing only a grungy white bra and too big shorts that sag around the waist. No such luck, Mom.”

Kayla and Betsy’s lives will crash together. And when they do, only one girl will survive.
