I Never
by Laura Hopper

Janey King’s priorities used to be clear: track, school, friends, and family. But when seventeen-year-old Janey learns that her seemingly happy parents are getting divorced, her world starts to shift. Back at school, Luke Hallstrom, an adorable senior, pursues Janey, and she realizes that she has two new priorities to consider: love and sex.

Inspired by Judy Blume’s classic Forever, I Never features a perfect, delicious, almost-to-good-to-be-true high school relationship . . . and it doesn’t shy away from the details. Destined to be passed from teen to teen, this is a young adult debut that will get readers talking.

with Laura Hopper

LM: What was your inspiration for writing I Never?

Laura: There is clearly a hunger, particularly among female readers, for juicy, sexy stories. I remember the enormous impact Judy Blume’s Forever had on me when I first read it as a young teenager. The current YA market was lacking a book that depicted the details of love and sex in a healthy way. I thought about what I would want to read if I were in high school and as a mom of teenagers, what would I want my kids to read.

LM: What was most challenging for you while writing I Never?

Laura: The biggest challenge was keeping it a secret. I had never written anything before and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. This idea came to me and I wanted to tackle it quietly. As much as I hoped this book would get published and find readers, I kept reminding myself of the probability that it might never make it out into the world. My husband was the only person that knew I was working on I NEVER. At the end of the day, it was really fun to share the news with friends and family that not only had I written a book, but it was getting published!

LM: Describe your main character—Janey—in just five words.

Laura: Confident and yet totally insecure. (Like all of us girls, right?)

LM: What scene from I Never are you most proud of and why?

Laura: I’m most proud of the scene where Janey and Luke have sex for the first time. The goal was to make it really romantic, yet still real. I think it’s the attainable fantasy about what the first time could be and should be like.

LM: Give us a little behind the scenes story about this book!

Laura: My son played little league baseball. One cold night out at the field, I overheard a group of moms wax on about the crazy joy they were getting from reading the Fifty Shades of Grey books. It was the moment I realized that we needed a book that satisfies the thirst for the juicy details but also paints the picture of a healthy relationship. I went home and started outlining I NEVER.

LM: Do you listen to music while you write? Any particular song/artist that inspired you while writing I Never?

Laura: In order to channel my teenaged self, I listened to ‘80s music while writing this book: REO Speedwagon, Hall and Oates, U2, Rick Springfield, Madonna. Music has a way of bringing back all the feelings of a particular time and place. By playing to the music I listened to in high school, I remembered what it felt like to be a teenaged girl.

LM: If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Laura: No contest: Judy Blume.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Laura: Running, hiking, cooking, baking, cheering for my kids.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Laura: Settle for nothing less than a relationship with someone who makes you feel good about yourself, your body, and your sexuality!
