A Void the Size of
the World
by Rachele Alpine

A haunting novel about a girl who must face the consequences after her actions indirectly lead to her sister’s disappearance.

Rhylee didn’t mean to kiss her sister’s boyfriend. At least, not the first time. But it doesn’t matter, because her sister, Abby, caught them together, ran into the dark woods behind their house…and never came home.

As evidence mounts that something terrible has happened to Abby, no one wants to face the truth. Rhylee can’t bring herself to admit what she’s done: that she is the reason her sister ran away. Now Tommy, Abby’s boyfriend, is the prime suspect in her disappearance, and Rhylee’s world has been turned upside down. Slowly, Rhylee’s family is breaking—their lives center on the hope that Abby will return. Rhylee knows they need to face the truth and begin healing—but how can they, when moving on feels like a betrayal? And how do you face the guilt of wishing a person gone…when they actually disappear?

FUN FACTS ABOUT A VOID THE SIZE OF THE WORLD
  •     This book has had a lot of titles!  Four to be exact:
  •     Circles Within Circles
  •     Back to the Start
  •     Then She Was Gone
  •     A Void the Size of the World
  •      Cornfields play a large role in this book.  When I was trying to work out a difficult scene, I actually walked through a bunch of cornfields to try to draw inspiration.
  •     When I was in sixth grade, a girl that was a year younger than me went missing in the neighboring town.  I remember the fear as everyone looked for her and that has stuck with me all these years.  If I had to say where the spark of this story started, it was in her disappearance.
  •     The town, Coffinberry, is named after a street that my grandparents lived on
  •     When I was pregnant, my husband and I went through names for our baby and he wasn’t a huge fan of the name “Rhylee,” which is one of my favorite girls’ names.  So I used it for my main character instead!
  •     Rhylee’s sister was named Amelia when I wrote the first draft, but then my cousin had a daughter with that name.  Since the character goes missing, I didn’t want to use the same name, so I changed it to Abby.
  •     Rhylee goes to visit a college at one point in the book.  I modeled it after Kenyon College’s campus.  I’ve attended some summer writing workshops there and love the little downtown area.
  •     Rhylee uses a pay phone in the book to make phone calls that can’t be traced.  I had a critique partner comment that she didn’t think they existed anymore.  Since then, I’ve been obsessive about spotting pay phones.  I seem to notice them even when I’m not looking!  And they are still out there!
  •     When Abby goes missing, the kids at the school write “Abby Come Home” by using styrofoam cups in the fence at the school.  I teach high school and my students write messages that way.  When I told them about using that idea in my book, they wrote “Abby Come Home” on the fence at our school!

Rachele Alpine is a lover of binge watching reality TV, dogs, knitting, gummy peaches, and lots and lots of coffee! One of her first jobs was at a library, but it didn't last long, because all she did was hide in the third-floor stacks and read. Now she's a little more careful about when and where she indulges her reading habit.

By day she's a high school English teacher, by night she's a mom and wife, and she writes during any time she can find in between! Rachele lives with her husband and son in Cleveland, Ohio, but dreams of moving back to Boston, the city she fell in love with while attending graduate school there.
