The Bakersville Dozen
by Kristina McBride

You have four days to locate five treasured trophies. Break the rules and you all die. Happy hunting!

Back in September, the town of Bakersville, Ohio made national news when a video went viral featuring thirteen of the high school’s elite in compromising positions. Now it’s May, and every month since the “Bakersville Dozen” made their infamous appearance on the national stage, one girl has gone missing. Officials are no closer to identifying the criminal.

Bailey “Like a Virgin” Holzman is getting really fed up with the scrutiny. She just wants to enjoy the rest of her senior year and have an epic summer before heading off to college. So when she discovers a note in her locker on the last day of school inviting her on a scavenger hunt, she thinks it’s just a sweet surprise from her boyfriend trying to cheer her up.

But following the clue leads her, instead, to the first official casualty. And another sinister envelope. The killer is close, and it could be anyone. Even the people Bailey’s always trusted most—her best friend, her perfect boyfriend, or the boy-next-door she’s always pined for.

With the clock ticking, she faces a terrifying choice: play the game by the killer’s rules—follow the clues, tell no one, and no cops—for a chance to save the rest of the missing girls, or risk becoming the next grisly victim.

MEET THE CHARACTERS OF
THE BAKERSVILLE DOZEN

Bailey
Personality:   Wish List – Fun, Carefree, Fearless
Personality:   Reality – Anxious, Suspicious, Afraid
Background: Bailey “Like a Virgin” Holzman is furious that she’s been included in the scandalous video-gone-viral, titled The Bakersville Dozen, which features 13 girls from her town. The video showcases each girl in a compromising position, and includes a less-than-flattering label. Bailey can’t figure out why she made the cut, but she doesn’t really care. She just wants life to go back to normal so she can graduate and enjoy a fun-filled summer with her boyfriend, Jude, all the while avoiding Party Boy Wes Green. But when she receives a clue kicking off a scavenger hunt and follows the directions, she finds the body of one of the missing girls and her life spirals away from normal in one single moment.
Quote: “My parents would kill me if they found out. I think they’re afraid someone might deflower the only virgin in The Bakersville Dozen.”

Jude
Relationship to Bailey: Boyfriend
Personality: Dependable, Solid, Admired
Background: Jude is popular and well-liked, a solid boyfriend who Bailey has come to count on for many things in life, including providing a distraction from the stark reality that five girls featured in The Bakersville Dozen video have gone missing in as many months.
Quote: “We made it freaks, geeks, an Barbie dolls! It’s the last, the final, the closing day for seeeeen-yours!”

Wesley (aka Wes)
Relationship to Bailey: Neighbor and Lifelong Crush
Personality: Party Boy, Player, Heart-Breaker
Background: Living next door to Bailey means that Wes has always been part of her life. Bailey has spent years pining for Wes, knowing all the while that nothing serious could ever come from a romance with Wes Green. Bailey is keeping her distance now, mainly because of the secret she and Wes share, but also because she doesn’t quite trust herself to be alone with him.
Quote: “You expect me to believe you decided to walk out here—directly to our spot—the moment you saw me and it has nothing to do with us?”

Hannah
Relationship to Bailey: Best Friend
Personality: Loyal, Intuitive, Curious
Background: Hannah and Bailey have been best friends forever. They are wholly committed to their friendship and can count on one another always, for all things. Hannah, a die-hard fan of true-crime, fancies herself an amateur sleuth and is equally disgusted and fascinated by the scavenger hunt Bailey finds herself swept into at the opening of the novel. Hannah’s in, though, for the entire ride. No way she’d let Bailey face something like this alone.
Quote: “There’s not a chance in hell we’re leaving your side, Bailey.”

Tripp
Relationship to Bailey: Brother
Personality: Protective, Thoughtful, Cautious
Background: Tripp is a typical brother, annoying, demanding, and protective. He loves his sister and would do anything to keep her safe. But after the first body is found, his ideas about how to handle the dicey situation don’t jive with Bailey’s, and they find themselves at odds.
Quote: “Look, I’m just freaked out, okay? I assume that’s a natural reaction after being directed to take pictures of a dead chick.”

Sylvie
Relationship to Bailey: Featured in The Bakersville Dozen – Labeled “Teaser, Not a Pleaser”
Personality: Obsessive, Determined, Forceful
Background: Sylvie is a perfectionist who likes to be in control. When the video hits the internet and turns viral in a matter of days, she takes it upon herself to lead meetings where the thirteen featured girls brainstorm who they think the culprit could be. Sylvie wants to catch the person responsible and save the missing girls, and is making sure everyone sticks together to help her reach her goal.

Quote: “There’ll be police surveillance at my party. No one will be able to get to us. If you go off on your own, you’re easy bait.”

TEN RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE BOOK

The Jumping Tree and pond location are based on a real life spot in my hometown of Centerville, Ohio.
This book was surprisingly easy to write – things flowed effortlessly, nothing felt like a struggle.
I tried to write the entire book without knowing the identity of the antagonist. It worked until I got to the final day of the hunt.
I routinely call this “the book with the scavenger hunt for dead bodies.”
I love and adore a few of the characters I’m supposed to hate.
I enjoyed playing with predictability and trying to flip things upside down.
I based a few of the characters off of students I had when I taught high school. (Not the creepy ones, I swear it.)
Some of the girls’ labels from the video make me a little uncomfortable. But the list is fitting and true to the story, so I didn’t alter anything major on revision.
The idea for this book hit me full force one summer night as I was standing in my sunroom, looking out at my backyard. Like, one second I had nothing, the next I had this entire book in my head (with one exception – the identity of the antagonist).
I love that this book took me into darker, edgier territory than I’ve ever gone with my writing before.

DELETED SCENE

I deleted a barbecue scene where Bailey was hanging out with her family and the next-door neighbors (Wes’s family). There was a lot of underlying tension, but not enough to drive the story in a new direction, so it had to go. On the flip side, I had a scene with Bailey and Wes where the tension wasn’t so underlying, but right on the surface. It took things to a place that I wasn’t sure I wanted to go, so I nixed it entirely. I loved the back and forth, the emotion, and the description of the setting, so it was a moment where I was “killing my darlings,” but it had to happen.
