It Started With Goodbye
by Christina June

Sixteen-year-old Tatum Elsea is bracing for the worst summer of her life. After being falsely accused of a crime, she’s stuck under stepmother-imposed house arrest and her BFF’s gone ghost. Tatum fills her newfound free time with community service by day and working at her covert graphic design business at night (which includes trading emails with a cute cello-playing client). When Tatum discovers she’s not the only one in the house keeping secrets, she finds she has the chance to make amends with her family and friends. Equipped with a new perspective, and assisted by her feisty step-abuela-slash-fairy-godmother, Tatum is ready to start fresh and maybe even get her happy ending along the way.

with Christina June

LM: What inspired you to write It Started With Goodbye?

Christina: I saw an abandoned dress shoe on the sidewalk the morning after the homecoming dance at my school and knew I had to write a Cinderella story.

LM: Tell us a little bit about Tatum—who is she?

Christina: She’s a lot like me at 16. She is funny and loyal and thinks she’s always right. Tatum has good intentions but sometimes falls short on delivery. She expresses herself through graphic design and dreams of pursuing it as a career.

LM: What scene from It Started With Goodbye are you most proud of and why?

Christina: One of my favorites is when Tatum gets an unexpected client for her secret graphic design business and realizes she’s not the only one at home keeping secrets. It was not part of my original plan, so it was a surprise but I went with it and now I can’t imagine the story without that happening.

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Christina: It has 2! Don’t Save Me by Haim and Miracle by Ghost Beach.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite scenes or quotes from It Started With Goodbye?

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you're not writing!

Christina: I love reading, traveling, watching movies, binging on Netflix and spending time with my family.

Christina June writes young adult contemporary fiction when she’s not writing college recommendation letters during her day job as a school counselor. She loves the little moments in life that help someone discover who they’re meant to become – whether it’s her students or her characters.

Christina is a voracious reader, loves to travel, eats too many cupcakes, and hopes to one day be bicoastal – the east coast of the US and the east coast of Scotland. She lives just outside Washington DC with her husband and daughter.

Her debut novel, IT STARTED WITH GOODBYE, will be published by Blink/HarperCollins on May 9, 2017.
