Reignited
by Colleen Houck

A sibling rivalry.
A forbidden romance.
A spell that changes everything.

In Heliopolis secrets abound and passions ignite as chaos rises.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Tiger’s Curse series and Reawakened comes a novella full of celestial marvel, passion, betrayal, and evil that will grow to reign over humanity forever.

Before Lily and Amon met, before the cosmos was in chaos and needed three brave brothers to fight off evil, there were four siblings who helped rule the earth.

Each sibling had a special gift. Osiris, the god of agriculture, helped mortals to grow and thrive in their natural environment. Isis, the goddess of creation, fostered health and wellness. Nephthys, the seer, was able to keep the balance between all living beings and the universe. But Seth, the youngest sibling, was left without any special powers. The Waters of Chaos, which granted each god’s talent, were running dry, and Seth was paying the price.

As time passed, however, Seth’s determination and willfulness resulted in a very special gift, one that should have granted him the ability to enact wondrous change. But Seth’s competitive childhood gave him a heart so cold and vacant that instead, his gift brought about great evil.

Seth was now the god of unmaking, the creator of disorder and destruction. And he was ready to seek his revenge, dominating all who got in his way.

with Colleen Houck

LM: What inspired you to write a prequel to Reawakened?

Colleen: I don’t know that it was inspiration so much that pushed me to write Reignited as it was a part of my contract, however, when I turned my thoughts to what kind of a story I wanted to tell, the tale of Isis and Osiris was the first thing that crossed my mind. I wanted to give my readers more insight on Seth and how he ended up the villain of the series.

LM: How did writing Reignited differ from writing other books in this series?

Colleen: Reignited is the first book I’ve ever written in third person. I dabbled in third person before in my prologues and epilogues but this book has a kind of freedom for me as an author that I didn’t feel while writing the other books. As weird as it is, I like getting into a villain’s head and figuring out why they are the way they are. In Reunited, the third and final book in the series, I had an extended prologue from Seth’s perspective. Most of this was cut, but I’m happy to say we’ve included that entire section at the end of Reignited as bonus material.

LM: Who was your favorite character to write; who gave you the most trouble?

Colleen: I loved writing Seth. He is really a complex fellow and fleshing him out was really fun. I’d say the character who gave me the most trouble is Nephthys. She’s got a lot going on beneath the surface and readers will come to see that in Reignited in a way they won’t in the other books.

LM: Give us a little behind the scenes story about this book!

Colleen: My favorite thing about Reignited was figuring out how the gods and goddesses came to be and how, exactly, the Waters of Chaos are pivotal in understanding the series. In Reignited we learn how Amon bound himself to Lily and get to see that spell in action when Isis creates the spell in the first place so that she will never be separated from Osiris, even after Seth kills him. This entire book is based directly on the myth of Seth killing and dismembering Osiris though, in my version, Osiris is unmade instead, which is a lot easier to swallow that seeing him get swallowed by crocodiles.

LM: Can you share a favorite quote or scene from Reignited?

Colleen: I think my favorite quote in Reignited is the ending when Nephthys and Amun-Ra are talking. She says, “I merely replied, ‘It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.’”

Amun-Ra picked up her hand and traced his fingertips across the back of it. “Do you believe that?” he asked, feeling as if everything in him hung upon her answer.

Nephthys eyes gleamed as they looked at each other. “No,” she answered simply. “Love, once found, is never lost.”

Obviously, I stole the first part from Tennyson, but I figured the gods and goddesses spent much of their time inspiring mortals, including poets. Eternal love is one of the themes of the series and it’s something I have a strong belief in personally, so it resonates with me in a lot of ways.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Colleen: I am a huge movie buff. If the movie and popcorn weren’t enough for me to like it, then the excuse to eat candy shoots it to the top of my list of favorite things to do.
