{Blog Tour} LOVE AND FIRST SIGHT by Josh Sundquist—Author Interview + Giveaway

Love and First Sight
by Josh Sundquist

Love is more than meets the eye.

On his first day at a new school, blind sixteen-year-old Will Porter accidentally groped a girl on the stairs, sat on another student in the cafeteria, and somehow drove a classmate to tears. High school can only go up from here, right?

As Will starts to find his footing, he develops a crush on a sweet but shy girl named Cecily. And despite his fear that having a girlfriend will make him inherently dependent on someone sighted, the two of them grow closer and closer. Then an unprecedented opportunity arises: an experimental surgery that could give Will eyesight for the first time in his life.

But learning to see is more difficult than Will ever imagined, and he soon discovers that the sighted world has been keeping secrets. It turns out Cecily doesn’t meet traditional definitions of beauty—in fact, everything he’d heard about her appearance was a lie engineered by their so-called friends to get the two of them together. Does it matter what Cecily looks like? No, not really. But then why does Will feel so betrayed?

LM: What inspired you to write Love and First Sight?

Josh: Most of us experienced sight for the first time as babies, so we don’t have any memories of the experience. I wanted to explore what it would be like to see the world at a later age, when you would be able to think about and describe everything as you looked at it for the first time.

LM: Who was your favorite character to write; who gave you the most trouble?

Josh: My favorite character to write was the protagonist, Will. Just because I think it was really interesting to limit his narration to senses other than eyesight. The character who gave me the most trouble was Will’s younger brother. I tried to improve him over many drafts but just couldn’t pull it off. So in the final draft Will is an only child. (Sorry, Henry Jr.!)

LM: Tell us a little behind-the-scenes story about this book!

Josh: When I told my family that I was writing it, my brother was like, “I’m so glad to hear you’re writing this book. Last time I was at your apartment I saw so many books about blindness on the shelf that I assumed you were slowly going blind and had not told us yet.”

LM: What scene from Love and First Sight are you most proud of and why?

Josh: The scene where Cecily and Will visit the art museum together. I think it’s important to know that art, including visual art, is just as important and can be just as impactful for a person without eyesight as for anyone else. Also, Cecily has this Vincent van Gogh fandom thing going on and it was fun to let that turn into dialogue in which she conveys excitement and creativity when she describes painting and impressionism to Will.
