Black Dawn
by Mallory McCartney

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and bringing Emory back she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

LM: What inspired you to write Black Dawn?

Mallory: Black Dawn, has a history close to my heart. I have always loved reading, so my passion about writing grew as this did. The original manuscript for Black Dawn I wrote when I was fourteen for my cousins sixteenth birthday. She was the first person to hear about Emory and her world. After this I left the story alone almost nine years, and it wasn’t until my husband and I got talking about writing and books we enjoy that I brought up Emory’s story again. I remember this day vividly, we talked late into the night and this time I knew I couldn’t let the story go. I started re writing the book the next day. So, the inspiration came from two people I love dearly, and wanting to tell Emory’s story. As I grew the story did as well, developing into what Black Dawn is now.

LM: Was there anything particularly difficult about writing Black Dawn?

Mallory: Oh, absolutely! Writing is one of the most difficult and rewarding things I have ever done. Black Dawn was hard for me to hash out all my characters back story, the history and how the events in the world had brought them there. This took a very, very long time and lots of revisions. And as always, my characters surprised me during the process, taking me down routes sometimes I didn’t want to go, but it made the most sense for who my characters are as people. The quote by Robert Frost, “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader,” sums up my experience with this series, especially in the next book in the installment.

LM: Describe your main character—Emory—in just three words.

Mallory: Ohh I like this question! Emory to me would be summed up as: Flawed. Strong. Selfless.

LM: What scene from Black Dawn are you most proud of and why?

Mallory: For me, this would be the dance scene at the Academy. This moment in the book is super pivotal to the story, this is where Emory accepts the weight of the situation she is in, but on the flip side she is trying to allow people that have been bound by war a moment of ease and of happiness. This also means she accepts the moment to grab what will also make her happy, despite knowing her own motives. This whole scene represents the fight with light and dark, love and friendship, loyalty and betrayal. It’s shown in different ways with each character, and that representation makes me proud.

LM: Give us a little behind the scenes story about this book!

Mallory: Absolutely! This one is for any Memphis fans out there! So originally in my mind, Memphis didn’t exist. In the original idea of the story, Brokk was the main love interest, which I am SO glad I changed! Memphis is a complicated guy, his character developed with the idea of the Rebellion and I knew I had to write him in. My husband laughed at me a lot when I’m was working on Black Dawn, because he would come home and the first words out of my mouth were something along these lines, “You will never believe what Memphis did in this part!!” He is my character I have the most love/ hate relationship with throughout the book, and his storyline took me on my own emotional rollercoaster.

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Mallory: I really love this question! Music is such an important part of my writing process. This was a hard one for me to decide but I have settled on, The Arena by Lindsey Stirling.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Mallory: I like to keep busy! I love hiking with my husband and our two dachshunds, Link and Lola. I am also a dog groomer. :) I have a never ending stack of books to read, and I adore going to the movies! On my off nights, I love spending time with my family and friends, either binging movies or enjoying awesome food and drinks! Matt and I also love travelling, so every year we look forward to our next adventure!

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Mallory: Thank you so much for having me! I am so excited to share Black Dawn with everyone and thank you in abundance to my readers for giving my story a chance!! It means the world to me ♥
