{Blog Tour} BEEN HERE ALL ALONG by Sandy Hall—Author Interview + Giveaway

Been Here All Along
by Sandy Hall

Gideon always has a plan. His plans include running for class president, becoming head of the yearbook committee, and having his choice of colleges. They do NOT include falling head over heels for his best friend and next door neighbor, Kyle. It’s a distraction. It’s pointless, as Kyle is already dating the gorgeous and popular head cheerleader, Ruby. And Gideon doesn’t know what to do.

Kyle finally feels like he has a handle on life. He has a wonderful girlfriend, a best friend willing to debate the finer points of Lord of the Rings, and social acceptance as captain of the basketball team. Then, both Ruby and Gideon start acting really weird, just as his spot on the team is threatened, and Kyle can’t quite figure out what he did wrong…

LM: What inspired you to write Been Here All Along?

Sandy: My editor Holly actually. We were discussing what my third book should be about and I asked her, honestly, what was on her manuscript wish list. She had the most fantastic answer. She explained that there was this fan made video of “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift featuring two boys and that what she really wanted was a book inspired by it. We all scampered into an office to watch the video and I was SOLD. This was exactly the kind of story I wanted to tell.

LM: What was the most challenging part of writing Been Here All Along?

Sandy: Just finding the most honest angle to tell the story from. I knew I wanted multiple points of view because there was a lot going and I wanted the reader to know what was happening with the two boys even when they weren’t doing a very good job of communicating with each other.

LM: Describe your main character—Gideon—in just three words.

Sandy: Driven, Intelligent, Awkward.

LM: Give us a little behind-the-scenes story about Been Here All Along!

Sandy: In the first draft of the story, Gideon’s brother Ezra didn’t come in until almost the end and definitely didn’t have any point of view scenes. After my editor read the draft, she was like WE NEED MORE EZRA. And I had to agree because he was such a fun character to write. I was more than happy to create a bunch of scenes from his POV.

LM: Do you listen to music while you write? Any particular song/artist that inspired you while writing this book?

Sandy: Obviously I had “You Belong With Me” on repeat quite a lot. But I can’t actually listen to music with words with I’m writing. I like white noise or instrumental music.

LM: What message would you like readers to take from Been Here All Along?

Sandy: I hate to give such a non-answer, but I’m really not sure. I hope that readers get what they want and need from it, but I don’t have a concise message that I was trying to send.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Sandy: The usual. Reading, Netflix, long walks hunting Pokemon. Recently I’ve gotten very into Broadway musicals, but that’s an awfully expensive hobby.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Sandy: Mostly I’d just like to thank all of my readers for reading!
