Unplugged
by Donna Freitas

The first book in a provocative new series from acclaimed author Donna Freitas—Feed for a new generation.

Humanity is split into the App World and the Real World—an extravagant virtual world for the wealthy and a dying physical world for the poor. Years ago, Skylar Cruz’s family sent her to the App World for a chance at a better life.

Now Skye is a nobody, a virtual sixteen-year-old girl without any glamorous effects or expensive downloads to make her stand out in the App World. Yet none of that matters to Skye. All she wants is a chance to unplug and see her mother and sister again.

But when the borders between worlds suddenly close, Skye loses that chance. Desperate to reach her family, Skye risks everything to get back to the physical world. Once she arrives, however, she discovers a much larger, darker reality than the one she remembers.

In the tradition of M. T. Anderson’s Feed and Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies, Unplugged kicks off a thrilling and timely sci-fi series for teens from an award-winning writer.

WRITING (WHILE) UNPLUGGED

So, I have very particular writing habits that help me get things done (most of the time!). Here are my essentials:

1) The writing chair. I have an amazing writing chair. It’s a chaise lounge, so I can put my feet up (I always must have my feet up!) and it’s pressed up against a bank of windows in my apartment in Brooklyn, because I like to sit and stare outside sometimes, and look at the buildings and the sky, while contemplating my story. Or, also, while procrastinating. J

2) Coffee. I must have coffee! One of my favorite moments of the day is my first sip of coffee in the morning.

3) Unplugging the wifi. Yes, I do this. I have to weave my way back through an office and all sorts of obstacles to do it, too. I literally pull it out of the wall.

And yes, I know that it’s a little ironic (or perhaps, fitting?) that I’ve written a book called Unplugged, while being unplugged from the internet. That title—“Writing (While) Unplugged” for this post—I meant it quite literally, with respect to my writing process. I don’t know about you, fans of Literary Meanderings, but I am unable to get much done when the wifi is on. I love looking at clothes and checking email and I get sucked in to all sorts of things I don’t need to be doing—everything except for what I’m actually supposed to be doing, which is writing. So about three years ago, now, I just started writing while unplugged. I’m able to concentrate and be in my story and be thinking about my characters without interruption—and this is crucial.

Honestly, I think I owe all the work and writing and books I’ve gotten done in the last few years to being unplugged in the mornings. I’ve written the entire series so far—Unplugged, and The Body Market, and now, The Mind Virus—offline. Then, when I’m done writing for the day, I get up and meander back to the wifi console and plug it back in!

But I definitely have being unplugged to thank for Unplugged. :)
