Genesis Girl
by Jennifer Bardsley

Eighteen-year-old Blanca has lived a sheltered life. Her entire childhood has been spent at Tabula Rasa School where she’s been protected from the Internet. Blanca has never been online and doesn’t even know how to text. Her lack of a virtual footprint has made her extremely valuable and upon graduation Blanca, and those like her, are sold to the highest bidders. Blanca is purchased by Cal McNeal, who uses her to achieve personal gain. But the McNeal’s are soon horrified by just how obedient and non-defiant Blanca is. All those mind-numbing years locked away from society have made her mind almost impenetrable. By the time Blanca is ready to think for herself, she is trapped. Her only chance of escape is to go online.

with Jennifer Bardsley

LM: What was your inspiration for writing Genesis Girl?

Jennifer: My goal for Genesis Girl was to create a YA book that didn’t remind readers of anything else. That meant no vampires, no werewolves, no teenagers in creepy reality television shows, and no twisted fairy tales. My inspiration was singers from the 1700s called castrati. These were young boys castrated at a young age in the hope that they would become famous opera stars who could hit the highest notes. In the Sci-Fi world of Genesis Girl, Blanca and her Vestal friends have their digital footprints castrated in the hope that they will become celebrities.

LM: What was the most challenging part of writing Genesis Girl?

Jennifer: I am a huge perfectionist which meant I revised my manuscript twenty two times before I sent it to my agent. Then once the editorial process started with the publisher, Month9Books, I combed through the book at least twenty two more times, strengthening the plot and looking for typos. At this point, I can almost quote Genesis Girl word for word.

LM: Tell us a little about Blanca—who is she?

Jennifer: Blanca is an eighteen year old girl who is graduating from Tabula Rasa school where she has been shielded from the Internet her entire life. She has never been online and doesn’t know how to text. Blanca’s goal in life is to become a Vestal, part of a quasi-religious order dedicated to digital purity. Blanca’s lack of a digital footprint makes her so valuable that upon graduation, Blanca will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

LM: Do you listen to music while you write? Any particular song/artist that inspired you while writing Genesis Girl?

Jennifer: “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Everclear was something I listened to a lot while creating this book. That song references a famous book by the same title that was published in1936 by Dale Carnegie. In Genesis Girl, Blanca is an expert at mind control, and she uses a lot of the same tricks that Carnegie proposed in How to Win Friends and Influence People.

LM: Can you share a favorite line or moment from Genesis Girl?

Jennifer: One passage I love from Genesis Girl is the Vestal Blessing, which is something Blanca shares with people when she believes they need extra support. It goes like this: “You have a hard road. In so many ways it’s difficult being you. But I know that you can do it. You have everything you need to achieve happiness.”

LM: What is the most interesting thing, good or bad, that someone has said about Genesis Girl?

Jennifer: Something that continues to surprise me is when reviewers describe Genesis Girl as dystopian. I placed the book fifty-ish years in the future after a brain cancer epidemic caused by cell phones, but the setting isn’t dark or disturbing. In my mind, the world that Blanca lives in is pretty much a good place, only people are even more tech-addicted than they are now. Maybe it’s a sign of my own addiction to Instagram that I don’t think of tech-addiction as being so bad!

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Jennifer: I am a Girl Scout leader, and my troop of Daisies just bridged over to Brownies. My girls have big plans for next year because they have a fat wad of cookie money to spend.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Jennifer: If any of your readers love talking about books, but don’t have time to participate in an actual book club, please take a look at my Facebook page, The YA Gal. Every Tuesday we have #TakeaLookTuesday and readers share pictures of what they are reading. Thank you so much for having me!
