Emerge
by Tobie Easton

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.

So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?

That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

MEET THE CHARACTERS!

Hi, all!  I’m really excited to be here today to introduce you to some characters who have become so, so real to me.  I can’t wait for you to meet them!

       1.       Lia Nautilus
Lia is our protagonist.  She’s constantly trying to find a way to reconcile her Mer identity with the human world where she’s been raised.  This can be a struggle, but it leads to her having a unique perspective.  Lia is very close to her family—her parents, her three older sisters, and her younger cousin, Amy, who’s like a sister to her.  Lia’s family loyalty runs deep.  To help you picture her, I’ll say that Lia considers her waist-length, wavy brown hair her best feature—that and her golden mermaid’s tail.  What I love most about Lia is that she tries so hard to do what’s right—even if she doesn’t always succeed in making the best choices.

       2.      Clay Ericson
Lia’s had a major crush on Clay since last year, but he’s totally off-limits because he’s human.  He has a rugged, bad boy vibe with a leather jacket and the cocky smirk that goes with it.  He’s a musician to the core and loves the intersection between rock and classical music (he goes to see cello rock bands perform and his favorite song is The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”).  He writes songs of his own and dreams of one day composing symphonies or film scores.  He has thick, dark hair and hazel eyes, and he calls Lia, “Nautilus”…sigh!

       3.      Caspian Zayle
Caspian is a merman who has been Lia’s best friend her whole life. That friendship hasn’t changed now that they’ve both grown up and he’s “packed on the musculature of a pro-athlete (he does more laps a day than an Olympic swimmer). But he’s still the same Caspian who helped [Lia] bury [her] tail in the sand and molded [her] a pair of legs when [they] were six. The same sandy blond hair that falls into the same knowing, ocean blue eyes.”  He’s now a towering 6’3”, but he still has the same strong, silver tail he’s always had.  His family is more traditional than Lia’s, so Caspian attends Mer school in Malibu’s hidden grottos and rarely ventures into the human world.  He’s very reserved and even shy around girls, especially since he and his family are often treated like outcasts because of the crimes committed by his great-great aunt, the infamous siren.  He’s the quiet type; he tends to reflect a great deal before any decision.  Caspian has a passion for languages and dreams of one day being a linguist so he can negotiate peace treaties below seas.

       4.      Mel Havelock
The new girl in school whom Lia hates the first time she sees Mel place a perfectly manicured, possessive hand on Clay’s bicep. Mel’s strikingly beautiful in a threatening, feline way.  Lia describes her as, “gorgeous. High cheekbones, sapphire eyes, and sleek black hair. Not to mention a lithe body that boasts more merchandise in the chest department than I’ll ever have.”  She has a syrupy sweet voice and calculating eyes. Saying anymore would risk spoilers, so you’ll have to get to know her yourself ;)
