32 Seconds
by Johanna Pitcairn

To the average onlooker, the city of Los Angeles represents glitz, glamour, and the celebrity lifestyle. But to seventeen-year-old Julie Jones, the city is a vast host of problems she’s longing to get away from. The latest? An unfortunate disagreement with her ex-boyfriend Mark—one that could land her in some serious hot water.

So rather than face the troubles that torment her, Julie decides to run away from her old life and start fresh somewhere new. But her parents aren’t on board with the plan, and she soon finds her bank accounts frozen and her wallet empty.

With just seventy-five dollars and a full tank of gas, the troubled teen is far too stubborn to turn around and head home. So what’s a girl to do?

What Julie doesn’t know is that her travels are about to take her somewhere unexpected—a place where she’ll be forced to come face to face with the ghosts of her past in order to secure her future.

A tale of redemption, hope, and freedom lost and found, 32 Seconds is a thought-provoking exploration into the human spirit and the nature of forgiveness.

LM: Can you begin by telling us what inspired you to write 32 Seconds?

Johanna: Hi thank you for having me! 32 Seconds is inspired by my life. Without knowing it, I used my past experiences and my failures as inspiration for Julie’s story. But this process came gradually. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to write a book about a tormented teenager whose painful journey would force her to make drastic changes. Julie Jones actually spoke through me without me knowing it. She took the lead, and pushed me into a deep introspection. What came from this process is a tale of hope, redemption and forgiveness. It’s always fun to think of writing as role-playing, and as the director of my own play, I get to tell my characters what to do, and I get to play them too. Sometimes though, the characters decide to do whatever the heck they want, and all I can do is watch and learn. This is exactly what happened with this story!

LM: What part of writing this book was the most challenging for you?

Johanna: The ending was challenging because I had to give resolution to the story, without cutting it too short, or repeating myself. My goal was to carry the message of the book in a clear, and simple manner. And bring the reader to an emotional threshold too. It was a tough balancing act. I cry every time I reach the end. I hope you do too!

LM: Tell us a little bit about Julie; who is she?

Johanna: Julie is the number 32. I used the number 32 to represent the number 5 (3+2), which in numerology has a strong meaning. Just to name a few characteristics of the number 5, they are energetic, adventurous, daring and freedom-loving. They’re versatile, flexible, curious, witty, courageous and wordly. The downside is that number 5 are also unstable, chaotic, self-indulgent, irresponsible and careless. The number 5 represents Julie. Therefore, the title 32 Seconds has a double meaning: 32 Seconds means the pause between a thought and a decision, and 32 Seconds also refers to Julie, and her metamorphosis from chaos to order.

LM: Can readers expect a bit of romance when they read 32 Seconds?

Johanna: Julie falls in and out of love, and questions her feelings toward male characters more than once, but her transformation and evolution as a character isn’t triggered by a romantic need. So romance isn’t really a big component of this story. I put more romance in my next project, The Manicheans Trilogy, as the plot calls for romantic relationships. 32 Seconds mainly promotes self-empowerment, and love of self.

LM: Give us a little behind-the-scenes story about 32 Seconds!

Johanna: Well, the first draft of 32 Seconds was actually a thirty-thousand word web series titled Death by Chocolate, which was published through my former publisher, and I think is still available on Amazon. I don’t get any money from it though, so I don’t advertise it. In the first story, Julie eats an enchanted chocolate given to her by the mysterious Gypsy woman outside the one-dollar store, and she travels to a parallel universe, which I described as Mayan. I created a temple, and an evil character, The Stranger, who was supposed to test Julie by giving her more enchanted chocolates. The chocolates in question affected her strength and speed, and she could fly like Superman. The plot wasn’t well developed. All I remember from the readers’ comments was that Julie had serious anger issues, and they couldn’t wait for the sequel to come out so they’d know whether Julie had tamed her anger or not. It needed a lot of rewrites and a better plot outline. Therefore, 32 Seconds was born!

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Johanna: I really like the Man of Steel soundtrack, and one song in particular, This Is Clark Kent. I listened to that song a lot while I was writing. The music translates everything I wanted to feel while I created Julie, and described her journey.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from 32 Seconds?

Johanna: My favorite quote is by far when Julie says: “Crap hit the fan faster than a fart in a hurricane”. She has other sayings, like “Clusterflying load of monkey bananas, I was about to be crisped to crumbles”, or “no shizzlenit, Sherlock”. Her expressions are very colorful.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't reading!

Johanna: I love to practice roller derby. I’m a member of the Garden State Roller Girls, as freshmeat.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Johanna: Thank you for having me, and I hope you enjoy 32 Seconds! It’s free on Amazon this week, so don’t hesitate to download it, and please leave your reviews as your feedback is very helpful!

Johanna K. Pitcairn has dreamed of becoming a writer since childhood--authoring her first novel at the age of nine, and countless poems, stories, and screenplays by the age of seventeen. Later, rather than pursuing a career as a director and screenwriter, she decided to go to law school, driven by her father's opinion that "writing does not pay the bills."

Ten years later, she moved to New York City, which inspired her to go back to the excitement, wonder, and constant change of being a writer. Pitcairn is a huge fan of psychological-thriller novels and movies, and delves into her hopes, fears, friends, enemies, and everything in between in her own writing.
