Seeker
by Arwen Elys Dayton

Their Legacy is…A calling. An Honor. A lie.

The night Quin Kincaid takes her Oath, she will become what she has trained to be her entire life. She will become a Seeker. This is her legacy, and it is an honor.

As a Seeker, Quin will fight beside her two closest companions, Shinobu and John, to protect the weak and the wronged. Together they will stand for light in a shadowy world.

And she’ll be with the boy she loves—who is also her best friend.

But the night Quin takes her Oath, everything changes.

Being a Seeker is not what she thought. Her family is not what she thought. Even the boy she loves is not who she thought.

And now it’s too late to walk away.

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Quin Kincaid
“We’re part of something . . . exceptional.” —Quin

Quin Kincaid is fifteen years old and has spent most of her life on an isolated estate in Scotland. Physically, she takes after her father, Briac Kincaid, with dark hair, dark eyes, and a fair complexion. In temperament, however, she’s much more of an idealist.

After years of sometimes brutal training, she’s ready to become a Seeker. Throughout her childhood, Quin has listened to stories about the noble ranks of Seekers who have come before her and used their skills to make the world safer and more fair. She believes that she can make a difference, like the Seekers in her family’s legends.

Little does Quin know, Seekers are not what her father told her they were. Seekers have become something very different.

Now Quin is about to take her oath and embark on what she is certain will be an honorable and exhilarating life, one that she’ll get to live with another trainee whom she loves, John Hart.

But the future will not give Quin what she expects. Everything is about to change.

Now, in the stables, Quin watched her arms moving the brushes across the horse’s back and was overcome by the feeling that her limbs were disconnected from her, as though body belonged to someone else. Her new scars were healing. There was the line on her forearm, where her father had cut her during that last practice fight, and there was the brand on her left wrist. . . . The scars also felt foreign, like marks on another person’s body.
Without noticing, she’d stopped brushing Yellen and was staring at her right hand, inside the strap of the bristle brush. She moved her little finger to assure herself that the hand still listened to her some of the time. . . .
Yellen stamped his front foot and twitched his ears.
            “Easy,” she murmured.
The horse stamped again and began pulling at his lead rope. She heard the other horses in their stalls, whickering and stamping also. Then she noticed a smell.
            Smoke.
            She stopped moving and listened.

John Hart
“It’s what we were born to do.” —John

John Hart was raised by his very wealthy grandfather in London and came to the remote estate in Scotland at the age of twelve to begin his training as a Seeker. Now sixteen, he has light brown hair and blue eyes Quin describes as “stormy.”

Though John started his training late, he’s intensely committed to proving himself and taking the oath, though his instructors seem doubtful that he’ll make it. In truth, however, John understands far more about being a Seeker than either of his fellow apprentices, Quin and Shinobu. He alone among those training on the estate realizes what truly awaits them after they take their oaths.

At a young age, John promised his dying mother how he would live his life and what he would become. Now he finds himself bound by this promise, even though he might wish to choose a different path.

His vows to his mother have put him at odds with the others in training. This is particularly painful when it comes to Quin. Because John loves Quin. He wants her to choose to be with him. But will that be possible when the truth about Seekers is revealed?

John realized he was looking at her with pity. She was a girl with stars in her eyes, born into the wrong family and the wrong century. Yes, they were part of something exceptional, something bigger than themselves, but he would describe it in very different words—words such as “ruthless” and “vicious.” . . . .
What would she feel when she discovered the truth? That there may have been noble Seekers once, but nobility was not Briac’s style? That her skills were going to be used for a very different purpose?
Softly he asked her, “What do you think you will be doing tonight when you take your oath?”

Shinobu MacBain
“Nothing was what we thought. I only stayed for you.” —Shinobu

At fifteen, of Scottish and Japanese descent, with red hair and already six feet tall, Shinobu is used to people staring at him. But Quin doesn’t stare. Since childhood, she has been his training partner, distant cousin, and closest friend. The two of them have together undergone the often brutal conditioning to become Seekers.

Shinobu is the best fighter among the apprentices on the estate—so good he is often teased that he loves fighting nearly as much as he loves girls. (There are lots of girls in Shinobu’s life—but only one he desperately wants to notice him.) The fighting skills, at least, should be useful when he becomes a Seeker.

Shinobu’s father, Alistair, used to tell him stories of Seekers who toppled tyrant kings, freed prisoners who were unjustly held, and who did all manner of good things in the world. Like Quin, Shinobu has no reason to doubt that he’s about to take his oath and begin the life he’s been imagining since he was a child. But what if that future doesn’t actually exist?

In truth, nothing is what it seemed, and very different plans wait for him.

“Do you recognize this place, Son?”
Shinobu surveyed the house, smiled. “A girl I know lives here.” He turned to his father, surprised. “How did you know?”
“I know a few things,” Alistair said. “Is she your girlfriend?”
Shinobu noticed a figure moving in an upstairs bedroom. It was the girl in question. Alice. He could see the top of her head near the window.
“Not sure,” he said, and shrugged. “She seems to like me. She let me kiss her.”
            “Did she? Was it nice?”
“It was.” Shinobu smiled again. As if there could be any question that kissing girls was nice.
“Look around the town a moment, Son. Please. Look at the houses, the people, the life they have. Once you become a Seeker, once you take your oath, you won’t see the world in the same way.”
