Fire in the Woods
by Jennifer M. Eaton

When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally. But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.

But her father runs their house like an army barracks, and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere. Ever. So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met?

Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.

Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.

As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

with Elizabeth M. Eaton

LM: What was your inspiration for writing Fire in the Woods?

Jennifer: Originally, I was just out to write something “short” so I wanted a story with a one-week timeline. Imagine my surprise when that one week ended up as a full-length romantic adventure novel! The story grabbed me in ways I never imagined, and it started writing itself. I guess you could say that the story idea, in itself, was my inspiration.

LM: Was it your plan from the beginning to go with aliens as a theme?

Jennifer: Yes, the original idea was a spaceship crash and a girl finding an alien in the woods. Since this was only supposed to be a two-week project, I just started writing with that idea in mind, and the story snow-balled.

LM: What was your favorite part of writing Fire in the Woods?

Jennifer: My favorite part of writing FIRE IN THE WOODS was how the story took on a life of its own. I was never at a loss for ideas, and always looked forward to my writing sessions.

LM: Tell us a little bit about Jess—who is she?

Jennifer: Jess is a seventeen-year-old girl about to enter her senior year of high school. She dreams of an exciting photography career, but is being stifled by her father’s dream of her carrying on the family tradition of a military career. She has a habit of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and by chance she trips over a boy in the woods who will change her life forever.

LM: Describe David's personality in just three words.

Jennifer: Confused teddy bear. He is really a sweet guy, but everything about Jess dumbfounds him.

LM: How did writing Fire in the Woods differ from other books you've written?

Jennifer: FIRE IN THE WOODS was a labor of love. The original story flew out of my fingers in two months. That was the fastest I’ve ever written a novel. I think this was because I wrote the story from the first person perspective (something I’ve never tried before) and I found myself deeply connecting with Jess as the story unfolded around her.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Jennifer: Just about every scene with David in it is a favorite. He is sweet and naïve and completely confused by everything having to do with humanity. There are several scenes I could show you, but taking them out of context, without “knowing” David yet would ruin their appeal. I’d rather have everyone read on their own, and tell me which their favorites are!

But for grins and giggles, I will give you my personal favorite line. This actually turns out to be a very funny scene, but this is Jess’s description of their first kiss.

“The heat of his mouth enticed me, like drinking cocoa that had cooled to the perfect temperature—only sweeter.”

LM: What message would you like readers to take from Fire in the Woods?

Jennifer: There are a lot of messages that ended up in the final product that were not intentional, and a few that were very intentional. I was mainly out to write a really fast-paced fun story, but in the process of doing so, I’ve created something that has engaged people in many different ways.

At this point, I’d rather not call out a single theme, because I think if people look for a certain idea in a novel, it negates the theme’s impact. Everyone will have a different takeaway from this story.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Jennifer: I can honestly say that writing is one of my favorite hobbies, but running a close second is hiking. That is probably why “the woods” wiggles its way in as a setting to so many of my stories. I also love snorkeling, although I only get to the reefs once every few years.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today!

Jennifer: Thanks so much for having me! It is always fun to talk about new aspects in my stories.

LM: Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Jennifer: Just that I really hope everyone loves FIRE IN THE WOODS and has as much fun reading the book as I had writing the story. It is really a novel for everyone, and it is all about kicking off your shoes and enjoying a fast paced read.
