Shadows Fall Away
by Kit Forbes

Mark Stewart is one incident away from becoming a juvenile delinquent, and his parents have had enough. They ship Mark off to London England to stay with his eccentric aunt Agatha who is obsessed with all things Jack the Ripper. After a strange twist of luck, Mark is struck by lightning, and he wakes to find himself in 1888 Victorian London.

His interest in a string of murders Scotland Yard has yet to solve make him a likely suspect. After all, why would a young boy like Mark know so much about the murders? Could he be the ripper they've been searching for? Convinced the only way to get back home is to solve the murders, Mark dives headfirst into uncovering the truth.

Mark's only distraction comes in the form of the beautiful Genie Trembly, a girl who is totally out of his league and who may have already caught the attention of the infamous ripper. To save her, he'll endanger both their lives, and risk being trapped in the past forever.

with Kit Forbes

LM: What inspired you to write Shadows Fall Away?

Kit: The idea first came to me a long long time ago. I wanted to do it as an adult romance with a modern police detective finding himself zapped back to 1888. I wanted him to try to solve the murders while trying not to fall in love with a proper Victorian lady.

Non writing issues derailed me for a long time and when I went back to the story I’d begun writing in young adult/new adult and decided to go back to where I started and redo it with that basic premise only with the son of a detective being the main character.

LM: Why London; why Jack the Ripper?

Kit: I’ve always been drawn to London and the late Victorian era. I also read a lot of books on the theory of who Jack might have been and the “what ifs” starting taking hold.

LM: Was there anything particularly difficult about writing Shadows Fall Away?

Kit: Pacing. The ripper murders had some time gaps between them and it was hard to find a way keep things moving forward when not much was happening that Mark could act on..

LM: Describe the dynamic between Mark and Genie in three words!

Kit: Wow that’s tough. Clash. Attraction. BFF (that counts as one word, right? ^_^)

LM: If this book had a theme song, what would it be?

Kit: Another tough one. Music is a big part of Mark’s life. His dad has a cover band with a couple friends and relatives so Mark grew up with 1900s early 2000s music. For the opening theme song I go with Misery by Good Charlotte would would be Mark’s theme before the story starts.

Later in the book he comes across an 1880s guitar and while it’s a bit weird to him it’s like having a piece of home. One of the things he plays is a 70s song his dad played for his mom—the Allman Brothers Melissa.

LM: Tell us a little behind-the-scenes story about Shadows Fall Away!

Kit: A long, long time ago I found an old family album at a flea market that only had a few photos from the late 19th century left. When I first began thinking of the Victorian characters those were the photos I used for inspiration for Genie, her parents and Mark’s Aunt Agatha.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Kit: One of my very favorites is the opening:

Of all the things I expected to do over the summer, staring
at dead hookers hadn’t made the list.

I stuffed my hands into my pockets and gave the body a
closer look. Behind me, little gasps of shock and a few “oh
dears” echoed. I didn’t see what the deal was. Yeah, it was
gross, but kind of interesting the way the woman had been
slashed and displayed.

Her intestines were pulled up towards her right shoulder.
Another length of her guts had been cut off and placed in the
space between her body and left arm to make it look as if she
cradled a baby. And on the slick cobblestones, arranged with
the precision of someone with OCD issues, were three small
black metal buttons, a thimble, and a mustard tin.

A mustard tin. Crap. If there’d been any doubt, the fact I
could identify the stupid little prop meant I’d spent way too
much time under house arrest with nothing to do but read the
Victorian murder mysteries Mom wrote.

LM: If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Kit: I’ve always loved the late Victorian era so I would like to go back to get to wear a fabulous bustle gown at least once, but I think it would fall under the category of “a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.”

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't reading!

Kit: Working at the day job or trying to brush off the ever present cat hair that clings to the dark work clothes.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Kit: Thank you for reading the interview and checking out the books. Look for me on Twitter (@kitforbeswrites) or drop me an email via my website (kitforbess.com) and let me know what you think of Mark & Genie.
