Kissed
by Kimberly Loth

Trapped in a dark cult, sixteen-year-old Naomi Aren has lived a quiet, albeit unhappy, life nestled deep in the hills of the Ozarks. With uncut hair, denim skirts, and only roses for friends, Naomi seldom questions why her life is different from other kids at school. Until the day her abusive father, who is also the cult’s leader, announces her wedding. Naomi must marry Dwayne Yerdin, a bully who reeks of sweat and manure and is the only one person who scares her worse than her father.

Then she meets Kai, the mysterious boy who brings her exotic new roses and stolen midnight kisses. Kisses that bring her a supernatural strength she never knew she had. As the big day approaches, Naomi unearths more secrets about her father’s cult. She learns she has power of her own and while Kai may have awakened that power, Naomi must find a way to use it to escape Dwayne and her father—without destroying herself.

LM: What was your inspiration for writing Kissed?

Kimberly: Inspiration for any book comes from so many different places. Naomi’s obsession with roses though comes from my childhood. Every summer I spent two months at my Grandparents house in western Michigan. My grandfather had beautiful roses that I helped him take care of. (Okay, so I held the bucket while he trimmed the rosebushes.) I took that love of roses and gave it to Naomi.

LM: Give us three words that best describe your main character—Naomi.

Kimberly: Brave. Inquisitive. Smart.

LM: The synopsis for Kissed is quite mysterious! Would you say this book has a major surprise-factor?

Kimberly: Of course. I love anything with a twist, especially ones I can’t see coming. There are a few surprises, both good and bad.

LM: Was there anything particularly challenging or difficult about writing Kissed?

Kimberly: The most challenging thing I had to do was combine two very different ideas and put them into one book. It’s a book about a creepy cult and a paranormal romance. The balance was difficult to find.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Kimberly: Sure. This quote is from shortly after Naomi finds out about her upcoming wedding to a boy that most of us wouldn’t be caught dead in the same room with, let alone think of marrying.

Most girls dream of a bell-shaped wedding gown, a towering cake, and a groom who adores her. I never think of any of that. Well, maybe the groom, but mostly I fantasize about the smell. My bouquet will consist of only Granada buds, sweet sunset-colored roses, and the church will be filled with Oklahomas, Elles, and Memorials. Those with allergies need not attend. But now, now with the wedding a reality, I think I’ll bring dead roses. And revel in their stench.

LM: If Kissed had a theme song, what would it be?

Kimberly: Can I choose two? I have two. Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi and Blown Away by Carrie Underwood.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Kimberly: I currently live in Egypt so in my free time I’m exploring the city. I love to travel, read, and watch crime drama.

LM: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Kimberly: I wanted to be a Veterinarian. Which is crazy now, because I can’t stand the sight of blood.

LM: If you could spend 24 hours in the life of another person, who would it be?

Kimberly: Johnny Depp’s girlfriend.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Kimberly: Just that I hope you enjoy reading Kissed.
