{Tour Stop} DONNERS OF THE DEAD by Karina Halle—Author Interview + Giveaway

Donners of the Dead
by Karina Halle

Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive.

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.

What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

with Karina Halle

LM: What was your inspiration for writing Donners of the Dead?

Karina: I was inspired over two years ago so I honestly don’t remember but I think it was the video game Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and the title “Donners of the Dead” itself. I think I was like, “Oh, like Dawn of the Dead but with the Donners. Yeah, I should write that.”

LM: Do you listen to music while you write? Any particular song/artist that inspired you while writing Donners of the Dead?

Karina: The soundtrack to the video games Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and The Last of Us, as well as the metal/rock/Native American-influenced album Anonymous by Tomahawk were some of the music on my playlist.

LM: Give us three words that describe the dynamic between Eve and Jake!

Karina: Feisty, funny and heartfelt

LM: As a horror lover myself, I have to ask: What can readers expect from this book in the way of, um, shall we say... gore? :)

Karina: Many body parts are consumed J

LM: Were there any aspects of writing Donners of the Dead that challenged you as an author—more so than usual?

Karina: Certainly one of the most challenging books I’ve ever written, if not the most. Normally I am a terribly fast writer but this book took forever. I would spend hours getting nowhere. I have nothing to blame except the time period and the research. Even though I spent a lot of time researching the book, I would still have to stop at every sentence and not only ask “Would they use this word?” but I’d have to ask “Would they talk this way?” There was no happy tapping away, go with the flow type of writing. This was very technical, pausing at every step work. So yeah. Really challenging!

LM: Which writers have influenced you most?

Stephen King would be one in the sense of stretching your imagination while I think Charlotte Bronte certainly influenced my love of sexual tension.

LM: Tell us what you enjoy doing when you aren't writing!

Karina: Well, when I’m not writing I’m thinking about writing. That said, I like going to hikes with my dog, drinking wine with my fiancé, and reading books. I read whenever I can. I also have a bad addiction to online shopping :S

LM: If you could, on a whim, get in a car and travel across the country, where would you go?

Karina: My country or your country? Lol. Well I’m not sure there’s anywhere in Canada I would like to go except where I currently am (Salt Spring Island, BC). As for the states, we just drove down to Palm Springs in December. I think I’d head somewhere new, like Zion National Park in Utah or the deserts of New Mexico. Anything dry and rugged, I’m there!

LM: What is your secret indulgence? A certain food? A particular movie?

Karina: wine and nori rice crackers!

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions! Is there anything you'd like to add; anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Karina: Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy Donners of the Dead. Sleep with the lights on!

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse with her fiance and rescue pup.
