Starstruck
by Brenda Hiatt

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is.

M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her.

As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly—literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly humdrum life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of. Yes, the middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

with Brenda Hiatt

LM: Can you start by telling us what inspired you to write Starstruck?

Brenda: Back in elementary school, I knew a girl much like Marsha, who had a rich fantasy life and used to tell us all kinds of stories about who she "really" was. I remembered her, and started thinking, "What if one of her stories was actually true?" That got my brain spinning, and then I started adding various things from my own awkward teen years. I confess there's quite a lot of me in Marsha!

LM: Was there anything particularly challenging about writing Starstruck?

Brenda: Oh, wow, yes! Even though I'd written and published 16 books before this one, none of them were for teens, and none of them required the kind of world-building I needed to do for Starstruck. I probably did more research for this book than I ever did for any of my historicals! And then, slipping into the teen world and teen characters was totally new for me, though I found it a LOT more fun than I expected! I really enjoyed channeling my own inner teen, though of course I had to get feedback from several REAL teens to make sure I was up on the teen-speak and the whole teen experience. Their input was very valuable, and so was their enthusiasm about the story!

LM: Describe your main character, Marsha, in just three words!

Brenda: Nerdy, plucky and underrated. (This was hard!)

LM: What can readers expect from Starstruck in the romance department?

Brenda: I can't imagine writing a book without plenty of romance in it, and Starstruck is no exception! Though there's a lot of other stuff going on in the book, I'd say the romance is the main theme. Without it, the whole story would fall apart, and I can guarantee readers a happy sigh at the end. :)

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Brenda: Hm. I have lots of favorites! I'm including one below from early in the book.

Scene:

"M, wait! I was going to say, especially when I'm hoping we can be . . . friends."

On that last word, he put a hand on my arm to stop me—and it definitely worked. When his fingers touched my bare skin, a jolt went through me like nothing I'd ever experienced before. I spun around to face him, startled.

I was used to static shocks since I got them all the time, but this was different. It was more like the surge of adrenaline you get when you almost fall but catch yourself. Only stronger. And not unpleasant. More like every cell in my body suddenly sizzled to life.

From the stunned look on Rigel's face, he must have felt something too. He snatched his hand away like I'd burned him and stared at me wordlessly for what seemed like minutes. It was almost like he was seeing me for the first time . . . or like I'd suddenly turned into some kind of freak.

He backed away, slowly shaking his head, then abruptly turned and ran off without saying another word.

I didn't have a clue what had happened or what I'd done, but I was pretty sure I'd somehow spoiled everything before it even got started.

LM: If there was a theme song for Starstruck, what would it be?

Brenda: Ooh, I know this one! LOL! Muse's "Resistance." (I wrote most of this book to Muse's music and several of their songs fit, but especially this one.)

LM: What do you enjoy doing when you aren't writing?

Brenda: Reading, of course! I also enjoy long walks/hikes, Taekwondo and scuba diving.

LM: Tell us an odd or little-known fact about yourself!

I have a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo (which I'm pretty proud of, since I only started as a white belt a little over five years ago!)

LM: If you won a million dollars tomorrow, how would you spend it?

Brenda: Traveling! I adore traveling, and would do a lot more of it if it weren't so expensive.

LM: Thank you so much for answering my questions today! Is there anything you'd like to add?

Brenda: Just that I appreciate this chance to talk about Starstruck! I've had SO much fun writing this book and love it so much, I want to share it with as many readers as possible! Thank you!
