“New Year’s Resolutions:
1. Lloyd Layton will know I exist. He once said three whole words to me, so this is obviously progress. If I don’t get a proper conversation out of him soon, then I’ll take my top off and streak through the cafeteria, because nobody could fail to notice these boobs.
2. I will not get expelled for streaking through the cafeteria.”
Those are the words that begin her mission.
Chessie is fourteen, not pretty enough, and very much in love. Lloyd Layton is hot, popular, and unaware of Chessie’s existence.
Her goal is clear: to get Lloyd to love her as much as she loves him, and she has exactly one year to do it.
As Chessie’s obsession with Lloyd reaches boiling point and she starts to spin a web of lies that spiral out of control, Lloyd turns out to be not quite the prince she thought he was. Can Chessie avoid the gathering storm before things go too far?
Not Pretty Enough is a contemporary young adult comedy suitable for ages thirteen and over.

The Ups and Downs of Writing YA
I don’t think the ups and downs of writing
YA are really any different to the ups and downs of writing in any genre. I
suppose the added difficulty is in hoping that my writing and book will connect
with teenagers, even though I am, sadly, not still a teenager myself. I still
think I’m seventeen, and sometimes it comes as quite a shock to look in the
mirror and realise that I’m not, so maybe that helps!
Writing in any genre has ups and downs –
the ups are when you’re whizzing through a first draft, the characters are
almost writing it by themselves and the word count is going up daily. The downs
come when the characters suddenly stop what they’re doing to wait for your
input but you have no idea where to go next, or when you go back and read
through the first draft that practically wrote itself and realise that it’s a
bit rubbish and most of it will have to be cut or re-written!
When it comes time for the book to actually
be published and sent out there into the big scary world, it’s an overwhelming
mix of nerves and excitement. Pride that you’ve got a book out, but sheer
terror that no one will like it. The added worry with YA books is that it won’t
appeal to teenagers, that it will get slated for sounding old and stuffy or
dated to the times when I actually was a teenager myself. It was only twelve
years ago, but times change so quickly – what if my own experience of being a
teenager was different back in the nineties? What if my book conveys that and
sounds old-fashioned? But there’s also the excitement of getting a new review
and a huge thrill if it’s a positive one. Each good review makes the nerves die
down a little, and makes any writer feel wonderful.
Ultimately, there are ups and downs to
writing in any genre, and all you can do is write the best book you can
possibly write and hope for the best!Jaimie is a 28-year-old English-sounding Welsh girl with an awkward-to-spell name. She lives in South Wales and enjoys writing, gardening, drinking tea and watching horror movies. She hates spiders and cheese & onion crisps. She has been writing for years but has never before plucked up the courage to tell people. Afterlife Academy is her third novel and she hopes you enjoy it. There are plenty more on the way!
