Character Interview with Zelenka

Please welcome Zelenka, a member of the miniature demick species from Elixir Bound. Hi, Zelenka! Why don’t you start by telling us a little about demicks?

Well, I cannot speak for the anni demicks (you would have to talk to Palafair about that faction of the demicks), but I can tell you the tilli demicks are a proud and independent species. All demicks—tilli and anni—originally came from Demick Island many years ago. They braved the perilous crossing over to the Great Peninsula because resources on the island were dwindling and the future looked bleak if they stayed. You humans might think the small stretch of sea we had to cross was a trifle, but for a species as small as us, I assure you it was quite treacherous.

You say you’re a small species, exactly how small are you? What other characteristics are unique to the demicks?

Although I am not entirely sure it is polite to ask about the height of a demick, I will oblige you this time. There is some variation in height, but most demicks—anni and tilli—are about a foot tall. Tilli demicks have darker skin than anni demicks. Us tilli also prefer to live independently of humans in the wilds of Faway Forest, unlike the anni who have chosen to live in towns and cities with humans, often working for them.

I’m sensing a bit of hostility in your voice when you speak of the anni demicks. Is it fair to say there is some tension between the two factions?

There certainly has been tension between the tilli and the anni, much more than tension actually. Shortly after crossing over to the Great Peninsula, the tilli and anni ended up in war against each other. Mostly over whether or not to live among humans. Both sides suffered losses. In an effort to prevent complete annihilation of the species, it was decided for the two factions to part ways. Hence why the tilli live in Faway Forest, away from most humans.

You mentioned Palafair, an anni demick. How did you come to know him?

I came to meet Palafair through the famed Elixir, a most powerful healing potion in the care of the Kase family of Tussar. He was part of a quest to retrieve the Elixir’s secret ingredient and it brought him into Faway Forest. The tilli army, in which I was a high-ranking member, captured Palafair and his travel companions as prisoners, but circumstances beyond my control forced us to work together. Before I met Palafair, I would have told you all anni demicks are weak cowards, choosing to serve humans rather than live independently. Now that I know him, I see I was wrong on that account, though I will never work for humans quite in the way Palafair does.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about the demicks or yourself?

The life of a tilli demick is hard. We have fought hard to stay independent, but conditions on the Great Peninsula are difficult for such a small species. We have faced food and water shortages, tyrannical rule by our own leaders, and the dangerous beasts of Faway Forest. Yet we are a resilient bunch. We fight passionately, but we love passionately as well. Many see us as savages because they only know the warrior side of us. There is the capacity for great goodness in us as well. I hope the anni demicks and humans alike will learn that of us.

Thanks, Zelenka, for chatting today. I do hope you get your wish!
