3:59
by Gretchen McNeil

Josie Byrne's life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are divorcing, her boyfriend Nick has grown distant, and her physics teacher has it in for her. When she's betrayed by the two people she trusts most, Josie thinks things can't get worse.

Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time—3:59 a.m.

Jo's life is everything Josie wants: she's popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they're just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror – Jo.

Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo's perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.

But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo's boyfriend, he hates her. Jo's mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.

By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there’s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it’s too late?

From master of suspense Gretchen McNeil comes a riveting and deliciously eerie story about the lives we wish we had – and how they just might kill you.

with Gretchen McNeil

LM: First of all, thank you so much for answering my questions today! Can you start by telling us where your inspiration for 3:59 came from?

Gretchen: This is so cliché, but I was driving home from work one day, and there was a traffic light turning red. I had a split second to decide: gun it or slam on the brakes. I braked, because I'm ever so responsibly like that, then spent the rest of the time at the stop light wondering what would have happened if I hadn't stopped. The idea grew in my head as I drove home, the idea that there would be two girls who are the same girl but in parallel universes, living out similar but different lives. While I was walking the dog, I started asking myself questions: What happens if these two girls meet? What happens if they switch places? The moment I got home, I emailed my agent.

LM: The synopsis for 3:59 gives me the chills! Can readers expect a creep-factor from this book?

Gretchen: Absolutely, though in a different way than POSSESS or TEN. This time, I wanted to take something uncontrollable – the darkness of night – and let the evil lurk within it. You can't stop the sun from setting, and you can't stop what comes with the night. There's an old X-files episode from season 2 called "Darkness Falls" (it absolutely scared the hell out of me) that inspired this concept.

LM: Entice us into reading 3:59 in five words or less.

Gretchen: Be afraid of the dark.

LM: Are there any messages you would like readers to take from 3:59?

Gretchen: I think the lure of this book is the idea that you could step into a life that is somehow "more better" than your own, where all of the things that seem so miserable about your own existence –social status, love life, school or career track, family relationship, etc. – are all flipped around. The problem, of course, is that nothing is as good as it seems, and sometimes, the life you think you want, might be even worse that what you've got.

LM: Is there anything you'd like to add? Anything you'd like to say to your readers?

Gretchen: A big, fat, sloppy THANK YOU! I am able to publish a third novel (and a fourth, and a fifth) because of you guys. I've been blessed with an amazing fan base, who have been ridiculously, fervently supportive. I get to do what I do because of you guys, and there is no way I could ever express my gratitude.
