Kaleidoscope
by Mindy Hayes

“Was I still a human? Gosh, I still wanted to be human. Even just to keep a sliver of whom I thought I was. But as I thought about being human, standing in the shade of the forest, I felt less human than ever. The trees fought for my allegiance."

It starts in her chest. The change Calliope doesn't see coming. It pulses like a second heartbeat, urging her to give in to the need to be in the depths of the forest. She's compelled to fight the pull, but the more she denies it the stronger it becomes until she finally surrenders and is pulled into a secret world of enchantment.

Kai and Declan need her to accept what she is, but with everything left unsaid, acceptance may be the least of their worries. Knowing their fate lies in her hands, they’ll stop at nothing to protect and prepare her for what lies ahead.

Will Calliope be able to accept what Kai and Declan reveal or will her desire to be normal keep her from acknowledging her true destiny?

with Mindy Hayes

LM: Can you tell us what inspired you to write KALEIDOSCOPE?

Mindy: I've always loved faeries. When I was a teenager I had a pair of Tinkerbell pajamas and a Tinkerbell 'Miss Attitude' t-shirt, which was ironic because I didn't have an attitude. Then when I became an avid reader and started diving into different faery books, I was thrown by the way other authors saw faeries. It was interesting to see different depictions, but then I finished a certain fae series where I threw my hands up in the air and thought, "That's it! I'm writing about the way I see faeries." Her faeries were pure evil and completely crazy. I just don't see faeries that way. I see them as earthy woodland creatures with a little bit of mischief.

LM: Tell us a little about your main character, Calliope.

Mindy: Calliope is strong, she just doesn't know it yet. I think that's what I love most about her. She's tells people like it is and doesn't apologize for it, but is able to keep a level head. She can be scared and insecure, but isn't that how most teenager girls are? She's seventeen and discovers she's half-fae. It nearly causes her to admit herself into an insane asylum, but she learns to cope with it. And it doesn't hurt that she's got a few hot boys to help her through it. ;)

LM: I adore the name Calliope! How did you select names for your characters?

Mindy: Honestly...I've loved the name Calliope since I first heard it on Grey's Anatomy years and years ago. Haha. But when I started writing Kaleidoscope it just fit the main heroine. She couldn't be anything but a Calliope.

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from KALEIDOSCOPE?

Mindy: Oh, this is a tough one! I don't want to seem bias to characters or give too much away! So I guess I'd have to say...

“It’s all just a lot to take in, okay? What if your mom came up to you and said, ‘Oh, Cameron, by the way, your father is an elf from Santa’s workshop and I’m an alien from outer space, so that makes you—”

“Something really messed up,” he cut in.

LM: What can readers expect from this book in the romance department?

Mindy: What's a good book without a love story, right?? The first book is just dipping its toes into the romance department. Calliope is in love with her best friend, but he's oblivious. Then she meets these two hot bare-chested guys in the forest behind her house and all bets are off! She just doesn't know it yet. It's more like a love quadrangle. I'm finished with the second book, so I can tell you...it'll only get more complicated as the story goes. You won't know how to choose! I even still waver on which team I'm on! We will just have to see where Calliope's heart lies. ;)

LM: What do you enjoy doing when you aren't writing?

Mindy: I read. Everywhere: at home, in the car, at the beach, at stoplights, on lunch breaks...you name it. This year I've been pretty consumed with releasing Kaleidoscope and trying to get Ember(the second book in the series) finished that I haven't had a lot of time for it though. I used to read 2-3 books a week. But I do what I can to make time for it because I find I have a lot more inspiration to write when I read.

LM: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

Mindy: Surprised? Umm...people always raise their eyebrows when I say I LOVE rock. Paramore, Novice, Automatic Loveletter, Story of the Year, Cherri Bomb, AFI, Acceptance, Fireflight. I guess I don't look much like a rocker:) It's all I really listen too.

LM: Tell us about your favorite book.

Mindy: Have ya'll read On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta? Anyone who follows my blog knows that it's my favorite book of ALL TIME! I know it's hard to pick a favorite, but that one gets me every time I read it. It's hard to get into a first because it's following two completely different storylines, but if you give it a chance it will change your life. It's so moving and interesting to see how the two storylines intertwine. READ it. Seriously.

LM: Is there anything you'd like to say to your readers? Anything you'd like to add?

Mindy: I'm so grateful for those that have snagged a copy of Kaleidoscope already! Readers help make stories come to life by reading them. And I love hearing from you! Email me. Facebook me. Tweet me. It seriously makes my day!
