Ixeos: Rebellion
(Ixeos Trilogy book 2)
by Jennings Wright

With rebel leader Darian free at last, the humans and outsiders on Ixeos must find a way to join forces and defeat the Firsts. The problem? All slaves are tracked with GPS, the Firsts are the only ones with power, and roving gangs hate the rebels just as much as they hate the aliens. As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs. As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they're pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

with Jennings Wright

LM: Can you tell us what inspired you to write the IXEOS trilogy?

Jennings: It was a strange combination of an article in National Geographic about the miles of tunnels under Paris, and a kayaking adventure my daughter and I had last summer where we found, then lost, a flock of ducks on an island in Beaufort, NC. She and I texted back and forth for a couple of weeks with stories about “where the ducks went,” and one day I sent the ducks to those tunnels. And that was the “aha!” moment for the story.

LM: Was there anything tougher about writing IXEOS REBELLION than IXEOS?

Jennings: The action is picking up, so there’s more danger. I love my characters and don’t like for any of them to die, but it’s not reasonable that they’ll all survive a global war. It’s hard though – especially when I know my daughter will start texting me in all caps when she reads something sad!

LM: One of the things I loved about IXEOS was how enigmatic the Firsts seemed. Can we expect more interaction with them in this installment?

Jennings: The outsiders are learning more about them, and as the rebellion heads to all out war, we see more Firsts in action. They’re not very nice…

LM: Can you share with us one of your favorite quotes or scenes from the book?

Jennings: My favorite scene is probably the climax scene at the end, so I can’t share it! But I loved the build up to it (and had a lot of fun with research for it), and I loved the surprise… Which is all I can say!

LM: What is the most interesting thing, good or bad, that someone has said about IXEOS or IXEOS REBELLION?

Jennings: I like that people are seeing the themes of good vs evil, of all people having a purpose. I didn’t want to hit the reader over the head with a lecture, but I think the best part about writing dystopian is that you can explore some deep themes in a realistic way. And this seems to resonate with the readers.

LM: What do you enjoy doing when you aren't writing?

Jennings: Anything on or by the water! I’m from Florida and grew up with boats and the beach, so whenever we can, I like to spend time at our NC beaches. I also travel a lot. A LOT. Sometimes I write when I’m traveling, but usually not.

LM: As a self-published author, do you have any advice for those trying to do the same?

Jennings: Do your research. It is an amazing time to be an indie author, and the community is incredibly generous. But you are an entrepreneur, and some people don’t want to do all the things that will be required to get your book in front of readers. No one publishing option is perfect for everyone, so research what it’s really like to be an indie author, a traditionally published author, and also look at some of the hybrid options out there.

LM: Is there anything you'd like to add? Anything you want to say to your readers?

Jennings: I’m really excited that IXEOS is entertaining people. I’ve enjoyed writing the books and building the world, and it’s great when you accomplish your goal. My goal as an author is to entertain. That’s it. So it’s just incredibly exciting when that happens!

Born and raised in Florida, Jennings spent her early years reading anything she could get her hands on, when she wasn't spending time in and on the water. She won a prize in the 6th grade for her science fiction stories.

Jennings attended the University of Tampa, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science, and almost enough credits for B.A.s in both English and History. She attended graduate school at the University of West Florida, studying Psychology. She spent time over the years doing various kinds of business writing, editing, and teaching writing, but mostly having and raising her family, homeschooling her children, owning and running a business with her husband, and starting a non-profit.

Thanks to a crazy idea called NaNoWriMo Jennings got back into creative writing in 2011 and hasn't stopped since. She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, also a business owner and writer, and two children, and travels extensively with her family, and her non-profit in Uganda.
