BTT! (07) ~ Writing or Riveting?

Q:  What’s more important: Good writing? Or a good story?

A:  For me, this one is a no-brainer. Ideally you want both, but of course that won't always be the case. When it's not, I think the story is much more important than having the best writing style. I mean, even if you are the best, most educated writer out there, there will always be someone around whose opinion of your writing isn't a good one. It all boils down to preferences and opinions. If I read a story that I find to be lacking something, but the writing is beautiful, I always make it a point to applaud the author for that in my reviews (a recent example would be my review of Crossed by Ally Condie). To me, it's as simple as this: If you have an amazing story, even the most common writing can't change that.
